Getting Your Beauty Sleep: Choosing a Back-Friendly
Mattress
People
often think that bed rest will cure what ails them when it comes
to back problems. But have you ever stopped to consider
that your mattress might be causing some of your pain?
It’s important to choose the proper mattress to ensure correct
back support.
“When
choosing a mattress you don’t want to buy the cheapest or the
most expensive one on the market. Try the options in the
middle of the price range that give the most support to you
back,” said Michael Hisey, M.D., Board-Certified Orthopedic
Surgeon with the Texas Back Institute. “Everyone’s spine
is different and you should evaluate a variety of brands and
styles before purchasing a mattress.”
Proper
support from a mattress is crucial to back health. Lower
back support, pressure point relief and proven inner spring
strength are important characteristics to consider when
purchasing a bed. Seek bedding made of natural fibers,
which allows your body to breathe easier and dissipate body
heat.
Also,
consider investing in body wedges. These foam leg and back
wedges aid in increasing comfort while you sleep. Wedges
can offer relief for those suffering from hiatal hernias and
circulatory problems.
Sleeping
back friendly may require a few adjustments to your normal
routine. Don’t sleep on your stomach. Try sleeping
on your side with a pillow between your knees, or sleep on your
back. If you have a sore neck, make sure you obtain a
special neck support pillow from a back specialty store.
Most importantly, check the firmness of your mattress.
When reclining, your spine shouldn’t curve. If your
mattress is too soft, your midsection will sink too far, if it
is too firm, your shoulders and hips will not sink far enough.
