Program Director: Andrew R Block, Ph.D.
Dr. Block received his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow in neurobehavioral sciences at Duke University Medical Center. He has over 25 years experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with chronic pain. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Purdue University. Dr. Block has written numerous books and peer-reviewed articles. He is the author of The Psychology of Spine Surgery, and the editor-in-chief of Handbook of Pain Syndromes. He also serves on the Conservative Care Committee of the North American Spine Society
Medical Director: James Cable, MD
Dr. Cable received his MD from Southern Illinois University, and is board certified in Family Medicine. He has over 20 years of medical practice, including chronic pain treatment and work hardening. He specializes in Medical Orthopedics, diagnostic and non-surgical treatment of primary, secondary, and tertiary care back patients.
He has been co-director of conservative care at Texas Back Institute since 1997.
Clinical Staff:
Licensed Professional Counselors(LPC's) In Texas, L.P.C.'s have 2+ years of post-bachelors' degree training and a state license to provide counseling. They are able to do behavioral medicine evaluations and pre-surgical screenings, as well as provide psychotherapy, biofeedback, self-hypnosis training, and group therapy. Any of the LPC's may be found leading a Group Therapy, providing individual Psychotherapy, or providing both CoPE Behavioral Medicine Evaluations or Pre-Surgical Psychological Screenings.
Behavioral Medicine Clinician: Diane Nickell, M.S., LPC/ CoPE Program Manager Diane received her Bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education from Texas A & M University, and her Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from University of Texas - Southwestern Medical Center. She has worked in the fields of physical rehabilitation and behavioral medicine for a total of 25 years and as a Licensed Professional Counselor working with chronic pain patients for 14 years. Utilizing cognitive behavioral techniques, reframing, and teaching relaxation skills are some of the ways Diane works with patients to problem-solve, adjust to changes in their lives, and improve their individual sense of empowerment.
Behavioral Medicine Clinician: Seth Myers, M.A., LPC Seth received his Bachelors Degree from Skidmore College, and his Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Southern Methodist University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and has worked in the fields of chemical dependency and chronic pain for over 10 years. Before joining Texas Back Institute, Seth directed a chronic pain program in an outpatient clinic. Seth is skilled in teaching Biofeedback within the CoPE program, as well as facilitates group therapies and provides individual psychotherapy.
Behavioral Medicine Clinician: Binita Kumar, M.Ed., LPC Binita received her Bachelors degree from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Masters Degree in Counselor Education from the University of North Texas. Over the past 6 years, she has worked in the fields of pain management, community mental health, chemical dependency and crisis intervention. Binita uses a cognitive behavioral approach to educate patients on coping skills and symptom management for chronic pain. Binita takes the lead in our vocational educational group therapies in the CoPE Program.
Behavioral Medicine Intern: Sabrina Austin, M.S., Ph.D. Candidate Sabrina received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and history from Baylor University, and her Master of Science in Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. She is currently pursing her Doctorate of Philosophy in clinical psychology at the University of Texas – Southwestern Medical Center. Over the course of her studies, she has worked in the fields of domestic violence intervention, rape counseling, and correctional rehabilitation. She uses cognitive behavioral and relaxation techniques to help patients learn to manage chronic pain while reclaiming themselves in the process. Sabrina also conducts research with Dr. Block to investigate the efficacy of psychological evaluation and intervention in multidisciplinary pain management models.
Occupational Therapists, (OTR'S):
OT's have 2+years of Specialized training, along with a Bachelor's Degree, in Physical Rehabilitation. Their focus is on improving strength, flexibility, posture, body mechanics, and overcoming pain through physical conditioning. They focus on each patient individually to provide the best way to improve functioning for that patient, no matter how much or how little they might be capable of doing at first. In addition, they can provide more of a work-hardening focus as the patient improves through CoPE, if needed for the patient to return to work.
Occupational Therapy Supervisor: Sherry Carey, OTR Sherry received her B.S. in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 1987. She is a member of both American and Canadian Occupational Therapy Associations, and has certification in ergonomics. She has over 10 years experience within Conquer Pain Effectively Program and work hardening programs. She has worked in inpatient psychiatric units as well. She has worked at Texas Back Institute for over 15 years, including 4 years as a Workman’s Compensation Case Manager.
Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant: Karla Futch, COTA Karla has been a COTA since December 1997. She graduated from University of Louisiana at Monroe with an Associates of Science in Occupational Therapy. Her experience prior to joining the CoPE program in November, 2007 was in inpatient and acute rehabilitation, outpatient, home health, school systems, and geri-psych rehabilitation.
Administrative Assistants: All three of the Administrative Assistants are willing and able to assist you with referrals or questions you may have regarding CoPE or the Behavioral Medicine Outpatient Practice. They are: Mary Alice, Brenda, and Angela.
