ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
To successfully treat a problem such as chronic pain requires an intensive, multi-disciplinary approach. The CoPE program is an intensive course of treatment to help with both the physical and emotional issues so common in patients with chronic pain, which represents a major time commitment. The program runs daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm, for 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the patient's goals and progress. If you meet admission criteria, your doctor may refer you to CoPE. After being referred, you will undergo a medical, functional and psychological assessment to finally gauge if the program could help you gain more control over your pain.
Often times chronic pain can bring on other pain-related problems which affect other aspects of one's well-being. As pain and pain-related symptoms increase, the challenge to maintain functionality and quality of life becomes greater. We therefore "measure" your physical and emotional baseline levels. The Physical evaluation is called a FCE. The psychological "testing" consists of an interview and some special testing designed for patients with chronic pain. These will help us develop the best treatment plan in order to help you best.
Conquering chronic pain requires a well-crafted, step-by-step plan that is individually tailored to the specific needs of the patient. It is the mission of the CoPE program to guide each patient's treatment with an individually-tailored treatment plan.
If CoPE is right for you, then preparations will be made to begin the program. For some patients who live far away from our facility in Plano, Texas, arrangements will be made for you to stay in a local hotel.
While each patient's specific goals for treatment may differ, it is the ultimate goal of the program to help each patient master pain and subsequently take more personal control over managing pain symptoms. Becoming the strongest advocate of your own pain management may be the most important change you'll ever make!
Your mastery of pain will rest on a broad foundation of knowledge. Below are just some of the topics taught though many of the educational groups CoPE offers:
